«Letters and Dreams» is a poetic improvisation-based work pertaining to the themes of ancestry and inspired by Deep Listening® – a practice established by ground-breaking feminist and LGBTQ+ composer Pauline Oliveros and her life-and-creative partner IONE, who is the featured collaborator on this project. IONE performed it live in Montreal with Ayelet, Moe Clark and Mili Hong, as well as pre-recorded samples from Ecuador. Aside from the performance, the piece had two soundwalks, still available in Montreal – one on Mont Royal starting at 1260 Rememberance Road near Beaver Lake Park, and one leading from the Laurier Metro station to La Sala Rossa
Other musicians featured on this recording include: Canada-based drummer Mili Hong and two Spirit, multidisciplinary Métis artist Moe Clark; Ecuador-based 28-person choir – Coro Mixto Ciudad de Quito, conducted by singer, musical director, and researcher Natalia Luzuriaga and with Quichua multi-instrumentalist Ati Cachimuel and percussionist Pati Ochoa.
The piece was performed once in Montreal at the Suoni Per Il Popolo Festival (2023) and once in Quito, Ecuador at Festival Ecuador Jazz (2023). The two performances were recorded and may emerge at some point as a series of videos or as a full length album.
