What is the difference between hearing and listening? Can you imagine listening beyond the edge of your own imagination?
Jazz is a music that combines so many opposites - and once you find that balance, then you have a guideline - between freedom and discipline, between rhythm and melody, between body and spirit, between mind and instinct.
We can’t teach somebody else to sing. They have to teach themselves to sing. All we can do is point out the shortest road to Rome. And there’s more than one way to go.
About Us
Our Montréal-based international community gathers online and in person, in order to “practice practice” (in the words of feminist composer Pauline Oliveros). Through sharing in each other’s works and processes we support creativity in all of its stages.
Founder Ayelet Rose Gottlieb founded Orchard of Pomegranates in 2019 to answer her own deep desire for a communal practice-space. During the Pandemic years this community became a home for many creatives seeking the same connection.
“As an independent artist of many years, I know how lonely our individual processes can feel;” says Ayelet. “how lost we can get inside ourselves when we’re dreaming up a new work. I wanted to make a space that is not ‘goal-oriented,’ but rather, practice-focused. Where we can show up tangled and imperfect and work through our own creative processes while witnessing others’ as well”
Orchard of Pomegranates wishes to support you as an independent creative – from the dreaming stages and all the way through to the full realization of a new work. We are here to meet you where you are.
To this end, we have created a multipurpose space. Each “tree” in our Orchard responds to a different aspect of the creative journey. Let’s take a wander through the Orchard:
Ayelet’s story is an intricate one, interwoven with stories of immigration, collaboration and creation. Born in Jerusalem, this Montréal-based artist is a composer, improviser, performer, dreamactivist and Deep-Listener. She is a mother to three small children and to eleven albums as a band-leader or co-leader. Among her many collaborators are composer John Zorn, ETHEL string quartet, dancer-vocalist Susanna Hood and Palestinian poet Naomi Shihab Nye.
A graduate of the New England Conservatory, Ayelet is certified in Jeannie Lovetri’s Somatic Voicework™, The Lovetri Method. She is also a Deep Listening practitioner, certified by Pauline Oliveros’ Center for Deep Listening. Aside from her work as a musician and mentor, Ayelet engages in video-editing, hand-drawing animations, painting, collaging, poetry writing and translation (Hebrew-English).
